Broncos QB Orton missed third straight practice, doubtful for Sunday game

It is very unlikely that the Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton will play with the team against the San Diego Chargers this Sunday, as he has missed three consecutive practices by Friday because of a sprained left ankle.

And backup quarterback Chris Simms took first-team practice repetitions for the third consecutive practice Friday since he did so after Orton was injured during last week’s 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins. Orton’s being unlikely to play means Simms will likely to make his first start since September 2006, when he suffered a life-threatening spleen injury while playing in Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey against the Carolina Panthers.

Whether Orton will play this Sunday will be determined after Saturday’s workout, when Orton will be put through the workout to see how well he could perform. He is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.
