NFL will encourage players to donate brains to BU for research

The NFL is partnering with Boston University brain researchers who have been critical of the league’s stance on concussions and the League is planning to encourage players who are wearing or used to wear NFL jerseys to agree to donate their brains to the Boston University Center for brain research.

The research was held by the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, which has said it found links between repeated head trauma and brain damage in boxers, football players and, most recently, a former NHL player. And according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the League also is committed to giving $1 million or more to the center.

There have been already three current NFL players who agreed to donate their brains for the research. They are wide receiver Sean Morey from the Arizona Cardinals; Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu.
