Free agent WR Marshall may join Seahawks

According to the Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, the team’s general manager John Schneider has been negotiating with the Denver Broncos restricted free agent wide receiver Brandon Marshall about a possible deal.

"There has been some talk," Carroll said today at the NFL owners meetings, per the Denver Post. "John has handled that so far. But it’s very preliminary."

Negotiating a contract is the first step in creating some action for Marshall, who has already visited the Seahawks. Since a negotiation is still going on, it’s likely that a trade will be worked out between the Seahawks and the Broncos. Putting on the Seahawks jerseys may give Marshall a new chance to prove his value as a star running back.

Seahawks signed offer sheet with Chargers RFA QB Whitehurst

According the NFL reports, the San Diego Chargers restricted free agent quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is likely to put on the Seattle Seahawks jersey with a two-year $10 million contract. Per the report, the Chargers may get draft picks, including a 2011 third-round selection through the trade with the Seahawks.


Whitehurst was the target of both the Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals, but the latter agreed to terms with former Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Derek Anderson on Wednesday, thus he signed the offer sheet with the Seahawks on the same day, making the trade near to be finalized.

For some reason, the four-year pro has just appeared in only two NFL regular-season games without throwing any pass. If the trade is going on well as it has been expected, Whitehurst is going to be a backup for Matt Hasselbeck after the Seahawks’ former No. 2 quarterback Seneca Wallace was traded to the Browns last week.

Seahawks OC Bates has nothing to say about LT Jones

Saying quarterback Matt Hasselbeck learns new system well, saying running backs Julius Jones and Justin Forsett fits new offense well, but the Seattle Seahawks new offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said nothing about tackle Walter Jones, keeping his status for 2010 a question.

The 36-year-old Jones posted on his Twitter page last weekend that “it is time for me to retire from football.” Actually he has not played since Thanksgiving Day 2008 following two surgeries on his left knee. And the anchor to Seattle’s offensive line since 1997 has used Twitter to hint at retirement over the last few months. But he also said that he still had a passion to play football in NFL jerseys and might test the knee in a spring minicamp.

Bates said of Jones: “In my short career in the NFL, he’s the best left tackle I ever seen.” That might be why the question for Jones’ status remains unanswered. Even the Seahawks executives have yet to confirm what Jones’ plan for 2010 season.

Houshmandzadeh is shocked with fuss in Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks current wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh tried to express he was totally a different receiver from Steve Largent. He did not think it necessary for people in Seattle to fuss about his way of express his feelings.

Perhaps people in Seattle were just used to their star receivers being quiet yet ultra productive like Largent, but Largent has been the past, Houshmandzadeh is Houshmandzadeh himself and he obviously does not like to behave like another person.

“I like myself, man, I really do,” Houshmandzadeh said Friday. The receiver angrily gestured toward quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to throw the ball more loft in the first quarter last weekend in Dallas. And in the third quarter, Houshmandzadeh was seen angrily shouting on the sidelines following the end of another possession in Seattle’s eventual blowout loss. The NFL’s leading receiver the previous three seasons had only 35 receptions in seven games with Seahawks.

Houshmandzadeh simply did not think there is any problem in his gestures or comments, as he said, he has been doing that since he put on NFL jersey and his former teammates from the Cincinnati Bengals were even surprised to see him not doing that until Game 7.

There is no necessary link between productivity and mode of act, so Seattle fans should be getting used to their outspoken wide receiver from now on.

Seahawks tackle Jones was placed on IR but not to end career

The Seattle Seahawks six-time All-Pro left tackle Walter Jones was eventually placed on the team’s injured reserve list on Wednesday. But the 35-year-old refused to end his NFL career just like this and said he would attempt a return in 2010.


It is the end of his 2009 season as well as the end of months of trying to return from the two surgeries the nine-time Pro Bowl selection has had on his left knee since he last played last Thanksgiving. Now he needs a rest and to gain enough strength for playing chance in 2010. With riches and nothing left to prove, the pre-eminent left tackle in Seahawks jersey of his time still thinks it is not time to retire.

“Because it’s what I love,” the anchor to Seattle’s offensive line for the last decade said, chuckling. “It’s a game that I have put so much pride in and wanted to be the best at. So I still want to come out and do my job and play this game.”

Jones had microfracture surgery last December and missed his first games due to injury since his rookie season of 1997. He returned in time to take part in Seahawks’ training camp but could not get through it and had a second knee surgery in nine months soon later.

RB James signed one-year contract with Seahawks

According to agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Seattle Seahawks have signed a one-year contract with the league’s leading active rusher Edgerrin James.


The news has not been officially confirmed by the Seahawks yet, but veteran running back T.J. Duckett told reporters Tuesday night that he was already waived by the Seahawks to clear roster space. The news came from a message Rosenhaus posted on his Twitter page saying “It’s official! Congrats to Edgerrin James on signing a 1 year deal with the Seahawks.”

James, who formerly played for the Arizona Cardinals, is the 11th best running back in the NFL with 12,121 yards. He actually did not take part in practices with the Seahawks in Tuesday morning, but Rosenhaus was seen inside the Seahawks headquarters Tuesday afternoon.

Seahawks LT Jones will have second knee operation

The 35-year-old left tackle Walter Jones failed to finish the Seattle Seahawks Monday practice. He will have an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Thursday morning, the second knee operation since he got the injury eight months ago.


The injury brought Jones to a micro fracture surgery last December and caused him to miss all but three days of practice in training camp. As the anchor of Seattle’s offensive line for the last decade, Jones was expected to be back with the team soon. He tried, but unfortunately there seemed to be some “loose bodies” inside the knee tormenting Jones, and he had to leave midway through the session.

Coach Jim Mora said the surgery would be just to check the “loose bodies” out and he believed Jones would be available for playing in the regular season.

Seahawks LT Jones had to leave camp again for injury

I guess something will be different when a football player turns to 35 years old, even though he is a nine-time Pro Bowler. That was my true thought when I read the news of Walter Jones leaving the Seattle Seahawks practice again with another injury.


Jones took part in just one series with the starting offense before he took off his seahawks jersey and left the field in pain. He stuggled by wincing and holding his back for a few moments before he eventually summoned the trainer to escort him into team headquarters.

The 35-year-old left tackle has been used as linchpin to Seattle's offense line for the past decade. But this year he has missed practice more than once. Contract issues, knee surgery and this time, back injury. I just wonder whether he will be able to learn the new zone-blocking scheme of first-year offensive coordinator Greg Knapp well enough to lead the team again.
